From the City of Brotherly Love to UnBelizeably In Love – and back again

“I am not just from Philadelphia, I am of Philadelphia”, declares Lara Goldman Philadelphia native turned Belize, Central America resident and founder of Romantic Travel Belize, a San Pedro, Belize based Destination Management Consulting firm. “My 100 year old Grandfather was born here, my mother was an original American Bandstand dancer, and my father used to drag race on the Roosevelt Boulevard with Frank Rizzo, Jr. I went to Beaver College and my entire career was based in Philly before moving to Belize” she explains. In a tale reminiscent of “Rocky”, Goldman owned a womens boxing gym and antique shops on the Main Line before her husband was tragically killed in a plane crash in 2004. In 2006 she moved to Belize, which is at the epi-center of the Mayan world, in order to help her heal, find her center and “get up off the mat”. And now she’s making a cameo appearance in Philadelphia hosting an event on May 9 at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology, which she describes as the pinnacle of her career, and symbolizes her own personal renewal, similar to the meaning behind the ubiquitous December 21, 2012 date.

The “UnBelizeably In Love with Penn Museum” Fundraiser and Bridal Experience on May 9 represents a come-back for this self described Philly girl. Atiya German, Rental Facilities Manager with University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology was excited by the proposal Goldman laid out to her on the phone from her home in Belize. “Lara outlined her vision of romance in the face of the looming December 2012 date, and of course this perfectly complimented our Maya 2012: Lords of Time exhibit which opens on May 5”, says German.

While surfing the internet and catching up on all the latest on the 2012 happenings I stumbled across a nice little section in a digital magazine highlighting the 2012 Maya Marriage of Many. It’s so cool to find what can easily be described as an amazing opportunity on so many different websites and articles and magazines etc..

According to Centro Y Sur Digital, The Maya Marriage of Many is a once in a lifetime romantic opportunity for anyone who has ever dreamed of getting married at a Maya archaeological site, on an auspiciously alliterative date, with 12 other couples, 200 guests, global media and A-list wedding photographers, of course.

Maya Festivals for the end of time

On 21 December 2012 — the winter solstice – the Maya calendar will complete a 5,126 year cycle and will come to an end. While some people are building shelters to prepare for the apocalypse, others are heading into the heart of Mayan civilization.

This is a great time to head into the heart of the Maya civilization and learn what made them so great. Before its collapse around 800 AD, the ancient Maya empire spread across southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Belize. Today, nearly 50% of Belize’s population is of mixed Maya-European descent and about 10% are indigenous Maya. While many of the most well known Maya sites are located in Mexico and Guatemala, Belize is home to hundreds of archaeological sites, 11 of which are excavated and open to the public.

In the lead up to the winter solstice, several sites throughout the former British colony are hosting events to celebrate the end (or the resetting) of the Maya calendar.

At the Caracol Archaeological Reserve in western Belize, the National Institute of Culture and History is holding four special events to mark 2012’s two solstices (21 June and 21 December) and the two equinoxes (21 March and 22 September). An archaeologist will lead a tour of the ancient site, nestled in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, and traditional food will be served. Overnight camping at Caracol will be allowed for the first time, allowing winter solstice campers the chance to witness the sun rise on a new B’ak’tun (or cycle) from a very historical spot. Each event is limited to 100 people; tickets can be purchased through the Institute of Archaeology.

If you are not visiting during one of the four solstices/equinoxes, there will be tours of Altun Ha, a major ruin on the east side of Belize, in addition to exhibits, entertainment and regional food. During “the 2012 Maya Marriage of Many”, 12 couples will tie the knot on 12-12-12 at Cahal Pech. Though the marriage ceremony is open to couples from anywhere in the world, the event is invite only.
So jump on the bandwagon and enjoy the 2012 revolution!

Meeting at University of Pennsylvania

It seems that lately Romantic Travel Belize and the 2012 Maya Marriage of Many are getting around! Next stop on the tour is the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaeology. What a great place to be considering that it is one of the “Ivy League” schools and it is also the first university of the United States! So naturally this place has a history of “making history” and hopefully we will be able to make our mark as well.

After spending some time there, it’s off to meet with Steven Singer Jewelers (a major jeweler in Philadelphia) who also happens to be the oldest “jewelers row”. Let’s see what the day has in store for Romantic Travel Belize and the 2012 Maya Marriage of Many.
